Prof. Sarah Hedtrich has held the Chair in Pharmaceutical Biotechnology at LMU Munich since October 2026. She also serves as an Affiliate Professor at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, where she previously held an Associate Professorship in the School of Biomedical Engineering and a Tier I Canada Research Chair in Human Disease Models. Earlier appointments include a Johanna Quandt Professorship at the Berlin Institute of Health at Charité and an Assistant Professorship at Freie Universität Berlin.
Her research combines pharmaceutical biotechnology, bioengineering, and nanomedicine to understand and treat inflammatory and genetic diseases of the skin and lungs. Her group develops complex human tissue and organ-on-chip models to investigate disease mechanisms and evaluate new therapeutic approaches.
A particular focus is the development of locally applied gene therapies that overcome the protective barriers of skin and lung tissue. Using tailored delivery systems, including lipid nanoparticles, her team investigates strategies for correcting disease-causing mutations directly in human tissue models, with the aim of advancing these approaches towards clinical application.
We warmly welcome Sarah Hedtrich to CeNS and look forward to new collaborations across our interdisciplinary network.
