Hermann Gaub recognised as a 2026 ScholarGPS Highly Ranked Scholar

30 Oct 2026

CeNS founding member ranked 17th worldwide in single-molecule experiments

Prof. em. Hermann Gaub, a founding member of the Center for NanoScience, has been named a 2026 Highly Ranked Scholar by ScholarGPS. In its lifetime rankings, he is ranked 17th worldwide in the specialty “Single-molecule experiment” and 287th in “Spectroscopy”. ScholarGPS identifies Highly Ranked Scholars based on publication output, citation impact, and h-index, recognising researchers with a ScholarGPS rank among the top 0.05% in their respective ranking categories.

Gaub pioneered the use of atomic force microscopy to investigate the mechanical properties of individual biomolecules. His research has helped reveal how mechanical forces influence biological interactions, protein stability, and molecular function. His group’s achievements include measuring interaction forces between individual ligand–receptor pairs, exploring the mechanical properties of single proteins, and developing techniques for manipulating and positioning individual molecules with nanoscale precision.

As one of the six founding members of CeNS in 1998, Gaub helped establish an interdisciplinary network connecting researchers across traditional disciplinary boundaries. His work at the interface of physics and biology exemplifies the scientific approach that continues to shape the CeNS community.
