Heterostructures made of two-dimensional (2D) materials offer a promising platform for realizing ultracompact optoelectronic devices. Their electronic bandstructure can be engineered by stacking, twisting and straining, and the charge carrier density can be widely tuned by gating and doping. We use stacks of 2D materials to achieve unconventional electron tunneling pathways and to realize nanoscale light-emitting devices. By coupling these stacks to photonic crystal cavities and optical antennas we achieve high quality factors and coherence lengths exceeding 5 mm, the typical size of photonic integrated circuits.
